Norman Stenzel’s large?HO Model Railroad Layout is located in Atlanta GA. The layout fills a 2000 sq. foot basement and it’s based upon a fictional railroad, the Brandywine & Benedictine. More info on format can be found here: www.piedmont-div.org Brief Overview: The Brandywine & Benedictine Railroad is a Class 1 Appalachian coal hauler modeled in 1953. It runs north and south from Winston Salem, NC to Pittsburgh, PA. Motive power is a 50/50 mix of steam and first generation diesel power. The railroad is designed with prototype operations in mind with jobs to keep 12 to 16 people busy. The B&B is controlled using Digitrax DCC and a computer running RR&CO software. Format owner is Norman Stenzel. This format is found in Atlanta GA. My visit: I and 5 members of the Orlando N-trak club (from Orlando FL) were invited to run on this format during the Dixie Rail 2010 [More]
Hey guys! This is a three part tutorial on how to install and convert your analog proto 2000 locomotive to a DCC locomotive with LED lights installed. I get my lights from Evan designs, they can be purchased from “modeltrainsoftware.com.” The decoders I use are digitrax DN143IP, but a digitrax DH123PS will work just as well if you can get it to fit. The locomotive I use in this video is a walthers proto 2000 RS27. Remember, on proto 2000 locomotives the blue wire goes to the positive lead, and the white wire is the negative. LEDS withOUT capacitors will need to be installed the right way, or it will not work. Wikipedia has a good article for information on that. The led positive lead will be the smaller piece inside the bulb, and the negative is the larger Thanks for watching How to install DCC and LEDs! Recommended ReadingHow [More]
All programming in this video was done real time with a digitrax zephyr (DCS 50) system, and an Intermountain Railway Company ES44DC (Norfolk Southern ES40DC) This video covers: -CV’s what they are and what they do -Programming CV with Digitrax Zephyr -Resetting and recovering a locomotive to factory settings -Programming a 4 digit address to almost any locomotive Important things to remember: – Setting CV08 to 08 will reset all settings to the factory value – A locomotive that has been reset will respond to an address of 03 – Remove other locmotives from track before resetting in ops mode – There are many ways to program these things, this is just one of them – It is hard to ruin a decoder by programming it incorrectly, dont be afraid to try things (reset if and when needed) – MTH locomotives are different – You must select the locomotive prior [More]

DCC Conversion tips Some people dread doing this, but its really very easy. Sit back and watch this video on how you can convert your engines from DC to DCC. PLEASE NOTE HORNBY RINGFIELD MOTORS YOU NEED TO DO THE FOLLOWING: ‘…….Hornby Ringfield motor is to test that the brush strips are insulated from the wheels and metal chassis of the motor once the original wires are removed. This may not be needed on a Lima Ringfield model but it is absolutely essential on a Hornby ringfield loco. Failure to test these brush strips will result in immediate decoder failure if there is a connection. Additionally placing a newly DCCed loco onto the main DCC rails and there is a wiring fault will result in instant decoder failure.. You should always try and use a Programming track which has a limited current output……. ‘ quoted from Flashbang on modelrailwayforum.co.uk (and [More]
For almost four decades, the Treasure Coast Model Railroad Club and Historical Society, Inc. have been bringing the fun and historical perspective of model railroading to the Treasure Coast. In 1975 three model railroaders in Vero Beach determined that there was interest in forming a Model Railroad Club. The Club thus had its beginning with this nucleus of interested hobbyists. The Treasure Coast Model Railroad Club declared itself as an actual organization on September 2, 1975. The railroad is modeled during the transition era between steam and diesel power of US railroads, which occurred between the 1940’s to the 1970’s. It is HO scale (1:87), utilizing a Digitrax DCC control system. Layout has two major freight yards, 2 city passenger stations, several industrial complexes, a freight harbor, steel mill and a coal mine. In addition, there are three cities, several towns, lakes, mountains and a desert. Many of the structures [More]

One of the most widely used model railroad layouts is the oval track, and there are innumerable variations of this. For variety, one may want to have turnouts and switchers along with sidetracks to park one engine while another is operating. In short, any design will need to be a little wider than the diameter of the turn, i.e. if a train requires a certain turning radius, you will need to double that for the width of your layout. A rule states that the layout has to be as large as the diameter of a circle, so under this form it is easiest to calculate a radius if your train has to take a 180 degree turn. Model Railroad Layouts of a Specific Area This often requires gathering a number of pictures of the specific geographic area that one wants to showcase accurately. Another very commonly used track design is [More]
